Events & Reportage
Many things go so fast that you barely have the time to enjoy it, let alone do photos.
And when it comes to sports and events with a lot of action, your phone might not get all of that, because it lacks that professional shutter speed that lets you freeze in time special moments. Record-breaking vault jumps, your kid crossing the finish line in the race as first, winning gold for the first time and many more. These occasions are made to be felt and lived through.
Let others do the work of creating photo reports of these events.

There are a few things to consider before we start working on a project together.
Photographing events means that I need to get the correct gear for the correct event, so let’s discuss your plan first! Company meetings and conferences, exhibition openings, sports events or just special life events — every one of these needs to be handled properly, with different light settings and correct lens.
When it comes to sports, speed is the key. As a photographer, you want to be everywhere, all the time. You need to keep track of the event, be it football match or athletic championships, but also take notice of how fans react. If you focus only on the first part, you get perfect shots of the participants but it looks like they are playing in a lifeless vacuum. They might have a lot of emotions on their faces, from determination, stress, to pure joy after succeeding in their goal, but it is also important to see how fans react.
If you do the opposite, you get good quality pictures of people cheering. But for whom, you ask? Exactly, that’s the problem.
When it comes to cultural events, there’s nothing better than showcasing the culture itself. If you have a traditional dance contest, you want to not only show the people dancing, but also their emotions and the movement through carefully planned action shots. But the lighting might be much different, and it can change during the spectacle, so providing the photographer with plan of the event is crucial. If I know that dancers will be clearly visible in a few minutes, I might pass on doing shots of them partially in shadow if it doesn’t bring you any value reportage-wise.
What about work-related events? Well, there’s nothing worse than getting caught playing with your phone when people around you are networking or listening to an exposé. To look professional, you want to be fully there, mind and body. That’s why you should leave creating thorough photorelation for a professional. Just remember to give hints about who’s important, what should I look out during the event, e.g. getting a few shots of your boss during important talks or you with your partners so you can later use these for your social media posts.
As you can see, the most important part in supporting you at events and creating reportages is the knowledge of 5 Ws that stand for Who, When, Where, Why and Why. If you provide me with this information, I will be ready to take that breathtaking photo of you during your talk on the scene, your kid scoring a goal or other important parts of the event.
You can also add one H to this rule that stands for How. If you want me to make a photo of you on the scene, it would be helpful to know which side of the stage you will be entering, for example.
A good reportage also means documenting stuff that goes behind the stage that can add that human touch to all your future posts on social media or blog posts. There’s a reason why old films used recorded bloopers and mistakes. You can always use them on media that has an expiration date, like Instagram stories.
